Popular Music Timeline

The history of popular music in western culture can be roughly divided into four ears.  And in each era the percussionist or drummer kept the beat in a different kind of way.
In the classical era you were either a drummer in the military playing a rudimentary style of beat to keep soldiers in time while they were marching, or you played in an orchestra adding emphasis and  flourishes to the music.
In the jazz era we see see the time keeping  job move from the snare drum to the ride cymbal.  During this period we also see the drummer move from the back of the band to the front sometimes being the band leader and an artists in their own right. some examples are Louis Belson, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich.
In the mid 50's we see the music slowly changing from the triplet based jazz feel to the more even eighth feel that we now call rock.
Some famous drummers worth listening to are Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, John Bonham all of which show their Jazz drumming upbringing.
In the 80's drum machine became prominent but talents of drummers like Phil Collins and Stewart Copland still managed to shine.
The punk rock resurgence on the 90's brought us drummers like Tre Cool, Dave Grohl and Travis Barker
