From the mid 1930's onwards, the main time keeping is done with the ride cymbal. The left hand and the bass drum often add complimentary rhythms (often called comping) that help create interest in the music or add new musical ideas to the what is going on.
In this series of exercises we start by learning how to add the snare drum on all 4 different beats of the bar. Then we learn how to add it on all the off beats, followed by combinations of the on and off beat hits.
