From the mid 1930's onwards, the main time keeping is done with the ride cymbal. The left hand and the bass drum often add complimentary rhythms (often called comping) that help create interest in the music or add new musical ideas to the what is going on. In this series of exercises we start by learning how to add the snare drum on all 4 different beats of the bar. Then we learn how to add it on all the off beats, followed by combinations of the on and off beat hits. One is feathering the bass drum playing four on the floor. This was done commonly during the 1920's and 30's. The second way is using is as a voice for comping which was used extensively in the bebop and post bop era by players such as Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. This this lesson we will learn how to add the bass drum on beat and on the the off beats.
